When Brooklyn was almost 3 months old, she was diagnosed with a disease called Biliary Atresia. Her parents were told she would eventually need a liver transplant, or she would die. Doctors did a kasai surgery right after the diagnosis, which helps the liver function a little better and gives kids more time before they need a transplant. Unfortunately, the Kasai didn’t work for Brooklyn; she would need a transplant sooner rather than later. When she was almost 6 months old, Brooklyn was hospitalized. Her parents were told she wouldn’t go home until she had a transplant. A few days before she was 6 months old, they got a call that a liver was available for her. The surgery was a success, and she has done amazing ever since. Not a day goes by that her family doesn’t feel grateful to the donor family for giving them this precious gift, Brooklyn’s liver. She wouldn’t be alive without it.
